Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to react after Josh Maja was named as the North East Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year.

However, Black Cats boss Jack Ross had to pick up the award on the young Englishman’s behalf, after Maja departed the club in January to join Ligue 1 side Bordeaux after rejecting the club’s offer of a new contract – the 20-year-old’s deal was set to expire in the summer.

Maja scored 16 goals in 30 appearances for the Wearsiders this season and was spearheading their promotion charge back to the Championship, but the fans seem to be split on their opinions of him following his exit.

The Sunderland academy graduate has since made one league start for his new side over in France, but failed to record a goal or an assist.

It was sure to be an awkward moment for Ross and the onlooking crowd, and it certainly got the Sunderland fans on Twitter talking…
